Description

Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) refer to three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. These amino acids are called “branched-chain” because of their unique chemical structure, and they play a critical role in protein synthesis, muscle recovery, and energy production. Since BCAAs cannot be produced by the body, they must be obtained through diet or supplementation.

BCAAs are particularly popular among athletes, bodybuilders, and individuals seeking to improve exercise performance, muscle growth, and recovery. Here’s an in-depth look at the health benefits of BCAAs:

1. Enhances Muscle Growth and Protein Synthesis
  • Stimulates Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS): The primary benefit of BCAAs, particularly leucine, is their ability to stimulate muscle protein synthesis (MPS). Leucine activates a key signaling pathway called mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin), which plays a central role in muscle growth. By increasing MPS, BCAAs help build and repair muscle tissue after exercise.
  • Prevents Muscle Breakdown: BCAAs can also reduce muscle protein breakdown by decreasing the activity of muscle-degrading enzymes. This makes them beneficial for preserving muscle mass during periods of calorie restriction (e.g., during a cutting phase) or long-duration endurance exercise.
2. Improves Exercise Performance and Endurance
  • Delays Fatigue: During prolonged exercise, the body uses tryptophan, an amino acid, to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in the sensation of fatigue. BCAAs compete with tryptophan for transport to the brain, potentially reducing the production of serotonin and helping delay fatigue, especially during endurance exercise.
  • Enhances Endurance Performance: Studies show that supplementing with BCAAs before or during exercise can enhance endurance performance by reducing perceived exertion, allowing athletes to sustain exercise at higher intensities for longer periods.
3. Reduces Muscle Soreness (DOMS) and Speeds Recovery
  • Reduces Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS): BCAAs can help reduce muscle soreness that occurs after intense or unfamiliar exercise. By promoting muscle protein synthesis and reducing muscle breakdown, BCAAs may alleviate the severity of DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), which typically peaks 24-48 hours after exercise.
  • Speeds Recovery: Supplementing with BCAAs post-workout can accelerate recovery by reducing muscle damage and inflammation, promoting quicker recovery between exercise sessions. This is particularly beneficial for athletes training frequently or engaging in high-intensity exercise.
4. Supports Fat Loss and Lean Muscle Mass
  • Preserves Lean Muscle Mass: BCAAs help preserve lean muscle mass during periods of caloric deficit, such as during weight loss or fat loss phases. By promoting muscle protein synthesis and preventing excessive muscle breakdown, BCAAs help ensure that fat loss comes primarily from fat stores, rather than muscle tissue.
  • Increases Fat Oxidation: Some studies suggest that BCAA supplementation, particularly during exercise, can increase fat oxidation (fat burning), helping individuals improve body composition by burning more fat during workouts.
5. Enhances Cognitive Function and Reduces Mental Fatigue
  • Improves Focus and Alertness: During prolonged physical activity, BCAAs may help reduce mental fatigue by decreasing the production of serotonin, which can cause feelings of tiredness and reduce focus. This is especially beneficial during long training sessions, competitions, or endurance events where both physical and mental endurance are tested.
  • Supports Mental Clarity: BCAAs can also support mental clarity by maintaining a stable blood sugar level during exercise, reducing cognitive decline that sometimes accompanies long bouts of exertion.
6. Supports Immune Function
  • Boosts Immune System: Intense exercise can sometimes suppress the immune system, making athletes more susceptible to illness. BCAAs may help maintain immune function during periods of heavy training or stress by supporting the production of glutamine, an amino acid crucial for immune cell function.
  • Reduces Exercise-Induced Immune Suppression: BCAAs can also help mitigate the effects of immune suppression after prolonged exercise, lowering the likelihood of getting sick during intense training regimens.
7. Improves Insulin Sensitivity and Blood Sugar Regulation
  • Regulates Blood Sugar: BCAAs, particularly leucine, may help regulate blood sugar levels by promoting insulin sensitivity. Leucine plays a key role in enhancing insulin secretion and facilitating the uptake of glucose into cells, which may help individuals with insulin resistance or those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Supports Glycogen Synthesis: BCAAs may improve the uptake of glucose into muscles, supporting glycogen storage for energy and improving overall blood sugar management.
8. Promotes Healthy Aging and Muscle Preservation
  • Combats Sarcopenia: As we age, muscle mass tends to decline, a condition known as sarcopenia. Supplementing with BCAAs, especially leucine, can help stimulate muscle protein synthesis and preserve muscle mass in older adults, promoting functional independence and reducing the risk of frailty associated with aging.
  • Supports Bone Health: Some studies suggest that BCAAs, especially leucine, may help maintain bone mass and reduce the risk of osteoporosis by supporting muscle function and strength. As muscle strength is a key factor in maintaining bone density, BCAAs may play an indirect role in supporting bone health.
9. Reduces Stress and Enhances Mood
  • Reduces Stress and Anxiety: BCAAs may help reduce cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone, by competing with tryptophan. By modulating cortisol levels, BCAAs can help reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, and mood swings, especially during times of intense physical exertion or high mental load.
  • Promotes Positive Mood: By reducing cortisol and supporting overall metabolic balance, BCAAs may have mood-stabilizing effects, particularly in individuals undergoing intense training or those under physical stress.
10. May Help with Liver Health
  • Supports Liver Function: BCAAs, particularly leucine, have been studied for their potential to support liver health. They may be helpful for individuals with liver diseases, such as cirrhosis, by improving ammonia metabolism and reducing liver inflammation, although more research is needed in this area.

How to Use BCAA Powder:

  • Typical Dosage: A common dose of BCAAs is 5–10 grams per day, usually taken before, during, or after exercise. The exact dose can vary depending on individual goals and exercise intensity.
  • Timing: BCAAs are typically consumed around workout times, either pre-workout (to support energy and endurance), during exercise (to prevent fatigue and muscle breakdown), or post-workout (to accelerate recovery and reduce muscle soreness).
  • Ratio of Leucine to Isoleucine and Valine: Many BCAA supplements come in a ratio of 2:1:1 (leucine: isoleucine: valine), as leucine is the most critical for stimulating muscle protein synthesis. Some formulas may have higher ratios of leucine, such as 4:1:1 or 8:1:1, to further enhance muscle-building effects.

Conclusion:

BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) offer numerous benefits for muscle growth, exercise performance, fat loss, recovery, and overall health. By promoting muscle protein synthesis, reducing muscle breakdown, and improving endurance, BCAAs are particularly effective for athletes, bodybuilders, or anyone engaging in intense physical activity. They also help reduce fatigue, support immune function, and improve mood, making them a versatile supplement for various fitness and health goals.

If you are looking to enhance workout performance, support recovery, preserve lean muscle mass during fat loss, or improve endurance, BCAA supplementation could be a valuable addition to your routine. As with any supplement, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional before adding BCAAs, particularly if you have any existing health conditions or concerns.

FAQs

We recommend a serving of 15-20g/ day, 30 minutes prior to exercise or during exercise. Many other brands dose their BCAA at much lower doses such as 3-5g. We do not recommend using doses this small as it will most likely yield little to no results.

Yes, this product is great for women as well (de Guingand et al. 2020)!

1. What do BCAA do?

BCAA have shown varied success towards promoting protein synthesis when consumed post-workout (Negro 2008). The most consistent increases in muscle mass are experience when BCAA are combined with a carbohydrate source. They've also shown positive results when taken pre- or intra-workout to prevent exercise-induced muscle breakdown under fasted or prolonged conditions.

2. Are BCAA safe?

Yes, BCAA have been extensively studied and have been linked towards muscle growth for over 35 years. Long term studies have found no adverse side-effects in users (Plauth et al. 1993). It is possible that users may suffer from muscle cramps or bloating. If these side effects occur we encourage the individual to monitor and adjust their water intake.

3. These taste awful, what can I do?

Unflavoured BCAA are notoriously bitter to consume! We strongly recommend starting with a flavoured version (which we stock!). If you're a seasoned veteran and want the most protein-packed version you can try to mix unflavoured BCAA with strong citrus flavours such as orange juice.

  26. O

Seems to be a Great Product at Very Decent Price. Happy so far. Cheers :)Re postage time: It seems unfair on the seller who offers Express Post (next day delivery) however, to then have the customer dissapointed by unreliable delivery times. My item took a week to arrive. Due according to Aust Post; Covid related reasons and plane shortage.I have received several normal post items recently that arrived from the same distances in only a few days.Seems like a coin flip to use Express Post.
